Metacritic Game Reviews, Resident Evil 4 for PlayStation 2, In Resident Evil 4. On the PS2 this year - and the best Resident Evil game since 'Resident Evil 2.'
It takes guts to approach a series that has sequel'ed its way into irrelevance with the goal of revitalizing it completely. Developers also usually fail when they try, which is why it was so surprising that Capcom managed to completely change almost every meaningful thing about the Resident Evil series and still made what is widely considered one of the best games ever with Resident Evil 4. Changing the face of third-person shooters forever (and probably condemning all of us to at least five more years of overly complicated cinematic quicktime sequences in the process), Resident Evil 4 was scary but action-packed. And, the PS2 version added new modes and a true progressive scan option for HDTVs, a step up from the matted widescreen of the Gamecube original. And really, who cares if the cutscenes were full motion video instead of in-engine?
